Makers and prices
Among the makers interviewed for this report, Jiangsu Hengyuan Silk Group Co. Ltd allots 80 percent of production to pure silk fabric, while the rest is for blended versions. Products are priced between $2 and $5.
The company, which was established in 1970, exported $21 million worth of silk fabric last year. Shipments go mainly to the US, the EU and Asia, all under OEM/ODM contracts.
Jiangsu Xinmin Textile Science & Technology Co. Ltd produces silk fabric blended with Lycra, spandex and Lurex. Prices are from $1.81 to $10 per meter.
The company coordinates with the Suzhou University Silk Research Institute in developing new designs. Its 60-member R&D team can finish buyers' samples in two to four weeks.
Nanjing Textiles Imp. & Exp. Corp. Ltd Silk Dept. No. 1 is a trading company with manufacturing capability. It offers silk fabric blended with spandex and Lycra, as well as printed and jacquard models. Prices run from $1.50 to $5 per meter.
Established in 1978, the company is capable of producing 1.4 million meters per month. It exported $30 million worth of silk fabric in 2006.
The company has sales offices in the US, Japan, Russia, Poland, Singapore and Hong Kong to allow for more convenient sourcing.
At Jiangsu Huajia Silk Co. Ltd, the best-selling models feature floral and abstract patterns. The company invests 3.5 percent of profits in R&D, with an emphasis on functional models.
Samples are sent to SGS and ITS for further inspection.
Jiangsu Huajia has a total monthly capacity of 1 million meters. All output is exported, mainly to the EU and the Middle East. Shipments are on an OEM/ODM basis.
At Wuxi Silk Star Group Co. Ltd, 80 percent of production is devoted to plain silk fabric. Models blended with ramie, cotton and wool make up the rest. Prices start at $4.10 per meter.
The company's factory is equipped with weaving looms from Japan and Italy. Of its 200 workers, 30 are QC inspectors and four are in R&D.
Dongtai Wangda Textile Fty offers silk satin fabric for $2.50 per meter. Prices might increase by 15 percent in the next 12 months. Of the company's 120 workers, 20 are in R&D.
Dongtai Wangda is capable of producing 50,000 meters of silk fabric a month. Exports in 2006 amounted to $400 million.
